Gender inequality: sex selective abortions

According to Sarah Ng in her article “Gender inequality: sex selective abortions”, when the People’s Republic of China was founded by leader Mao Zedong, one of his main policies was the desire to get rid of Chinese bad behaviors, such as gender inequality, foot-binding (Chinese women believe it will make them look pretty), bride-selling, and so on. In the metropolitan areas, his plan seemed to work, but in the countryside it still doesn’t work. The Chinese government wants to control people’s birth rate, so they have a one-child policy. If the people don’t follow the rules, they will be fined and the children will not have any social benefits. This policy has had a bad influence on female infants, because in rural areas, people want to have more sons than daughters, so they choose the sex before birth of their children.
Chinese has had gender inequality for ages. In the urban areas, the situation has had become better, but in the rural areas, they still have lots of room to improve the situations. Government should do something to stop this situation. After I thought carefully, I have found some methods such as following:
First of all, Chinese government should make a strict law about abortions, especially the sex-selective ones. People can’t change a child’s sex after doing ultrasound. The only legal time to have abortion is when the child has problems. If this policy works, there will be more chance to have girls.
In addition, the government should teach people the sex equality is very important. They should teach people this idea when they are young, such as teaching in class when people in elementary schools. Schools should teach people before they have any bias about sex, especially in the rural areas; government should spend more resources on there.
Finally but not least, government can try to allow people to have more children until they get boys. Sometimes it is hard to find a balance between culture and real life. In Chinese culture, most people want to have a boy. We need to try to find a balance.
In brief, sometimes a small change can make things better, as in this situation. We can try to use a restrictive law, teach people, and allow people to have more children. We should do something to prevent the situation from becoming worse.

Gender Inequality in China

According to Li,xing in her article “Gender Inequality in China”. People think when the economy becomes better, the gender gap will seem to become less; however, this isn’t happening in China. At first glance, the Chinese income gap between men and women seems to have become less, but this is not truth. The truth is that it cannot reflect truth that the gender inequality still exists in politics, education, and survival of infant girls. The main reason is an unbalanced birth rate. Although government forbids people to practice gender discrimination, it still happens. Some laws still have gender discrimination. For example, women need to retire at the age fifty, but men at the age of sixty.
Nowadays, gender inequality still exists in China; it has already happened for ages. Now it’s become more serious, so we need to use some special methods to deal with these problems. When the situation becomes on the track, we can change the other policies to try to keep gender equality. We can use some methods such as the following:

First of all, we can encourage people to have more girls. Government can use money to give people who have girls as a reward, giving money annually until the girl finishes college. People will not worry about money to raise girl. Especially in China, most people think having girl babies is wasting money, because when they grow up, they will not take care of their parents. The policy can make people have the desire want to have more girls than boys. It can increase girls’ birth rates a lot.
In addition, government can give some extra money to families that have girls. They can give some families who have girls some rewards, such as: freedom from tax for 10years, or being able to have a girl and a boy at the same time (That’s because Chinese only can have a child) and maybe some money.
Finally, the law should strongly protect infant girls. In rural areas, some people will kill infant girls because they think they can’t work to help farming. In order to improve this situation, government needs to use strict laws to control people’s behavior until they change this bad behavior.

In brief, different situations should have different solutions. We can use encouragement, reward and protection to make this strong inequality become better. That’s what we should do. In the future, when the situation becomes better, we can change other policies. Government should change depending on the situation and can’t use one rule without thinking change old policies.

The article was written by Mr. Geoffery Lean, called “Oil: A global crisis”. This mainly talks about what happens in nowadays. All people face the same problem, which is that we have an oil crisis. Even though we have this kind of problem, Americans still attack Iraq in order to get more oil; however, it doesn’t work. The results just make the situation become worse. Although in the west countries, there is recession, in other countries such as China, Russia and other OPEC countries, their demand is only increasing very quickly, not slowing down at all. In China, even if the price goes very high, they still have lots of demand. Some people predict recession in the western countries will balance growth in the other countries. However, it won't happen in recent years.

Although I know it’s hard, I think the oil should be replaced by the other resources. We should develop alternative resources. Here are some reasons.

First of all, people will run out of this resource one day; we can’t wait until that day happens. We already know that there will be less and less fuel, however, for some developing countries such as China and Russia, these countries just need more. Although people are already trying to develop the use of corn to produce oil and still try use other resources to produce oil. However, it still requires time. Just like making a woman pregnant; it takes time to have a baby. It’s impossible to have a baby just after getting pregnant.

In addition, if we don’t have to worry about an oil crisis, wars will become less due to oil. When people have more fuel; they can do the thing they want; it will make life better. Everybody will be happy. They can just enjoy life and don’t need to worry about resources.

Finally but not least, when people use other resources, they can try to make the environment better. New resources can produce less damage to our environment. It can produces less CO2, reduce global warming, and so on.

In brief, most of our governments know their replacing resources is very important. The government should spend most of its money on alternative resources, not on war.
